Göteborgs IVF Klinik

Before IVF or donor treatment

What to consider before your first visit for IVF (in vitro fertilization) or donor treatment at Göteborgs IVF Klinik

At the first visit, you (and your partner, if applicable) will review your medical history, fertility evaluation and any previous treatments together with the doctor. Therefore, it’s important that both of you bring all medical records and lab results from any previous evaluations and treatments. We will discuss treatment options and your chances of success, and set up an individualized treatment plan based on your history and any prior treatments. A gynecological exam with transvaginal ultrasound will be done during the visit (ongoing menstruation does not matter). If needed, blood tests will be taken at the visit. Costs for any tests are added according to the price list.

If you have a male partner: at the doctor’s visit, a decision will be made whether a semen analysis is needed before treatment. An examination of the testicles may also be required.

After the consultation, you will meet a midwife who will go through your specific treatment plan, demonstrate how to take the injections, and plan a suitable start date. Please allow two hours for this first visit to the clinic.

Before your first doctor’s visit, please:

  • If you are in a couple, both of you must attend the first visit at the clinic.
  • Bring valid ID for both of you.
  • You’ll find our Health Declaration under Forms on our website. Please complete it and bring it to the visit (one form per person).
  • Bring medical records and lab results from previous healthcare providers. If you are a couple, we need records and results for both of you. Order copies of your records (including all lab results) well in advance of your visit and bring them with you. Missing documentation will delay the start of treatment.
  • Fertility work-up: Bring all documentation from the work-up (including any cavity assessment and/or tubal patency test such as HSS/HyCoSy). Request original copies of all tests you have taken, including any semen analysis.
  • Previous IVF/Donor treatments: Bring all notes, original copies of blood tests, semen analyses and embryo reports (available if you have undergone IVF before).
  • Infection screening for HIV 1/2, Hepatitis B/C, syphilis, HTLV 1/2, chlamydia and gonorrhea is required by authorities before treatment. If you are a blood donor and have recently been screened, please bring the original lab reports. These results must not be older than 2 years at the time of treatment.
  • Cervical cytology (Pap test) should be taken within the last 2.5 years. If needed, book this at your primary care or midwife clinic. You can log in to 1177 to check your latest result if you’re unsure.
  • Bring documentation from any other healthcare contacts relevant to your treatment.
  • If you have a medical condition, please inform your treating physician early that you are planning a pregnancy. Some medications may need to be optimized before pregnancy (applies to both women and men) or changed once pregnant. Bring a note from that consultation to your first visit. If this plan is not yet in place, we may need to wait before starting treatment.
  • Please read “A small book about IVF” which you’ll find under the During treatment tab on our website.
  • Review the Price List before your visit. The doctor will also discuss the financial aspects during your consultation.
  • If there are hereditary diseases in your immediate family (parents or siblings), gather as much information as possible before the visit. If any of them have had a blood clot before age 60, ask whether a thrombosis work-up for hereditary risk was done. If not, visit your primary care clinic to have this done and bring the results. If this has not been clarified before your visit, the woman who will carry the pregnancy may need to complete this assessment before stimulation, which can delay treatment start.
  • Anyone planning to become pregnant within the next few months is advised to take folic acid supplements. The recommended dose is 400 micrograms per day. Folic acid is available over the counter. Preferably start before your visit.

All physicians at Göteborgs IVF Klinik are senior consultants and specialists in Gynecology and Obstetrics. The doctor you meet at your first visit becomes your primary responsible physician (PAL). Your PAL oversees the planning and follow-up of your treatment. During the treatment period, all doctors collaborate; this means you may meet other physicians at ultrasound scans, egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
