Semen sample submission+

Ideally, the sample should be collected 1–2 days after your most recent ejaculation. Collect the sample by masturbation.

If your travel time to the clinic is under 1 hour, you may collect the sample at home. Deliver it to the laboratory for analysis within 1 hour.

Use a sterile container (labelled with your name and personal identity number) provided by Göteborgs IVF Klinik. Keep the sample close to your body during transport so it does not cool down. It is important to collect the entire ejaculate, as most sperm are contained in the first fraction.

If home collection is not possible, collection rooms are available at the clinic.

Do not use a condom to collect the sample, as condoms may contain spermicides.

Summary

  • Collect the sample 1–2 days after the last ejaculation.
  • Make sure to collect the entire sample.
  • Do not use condoms or lubricants.
  • If collected at home, deliver to the laboratory within one hour and keep it at body temperature.
Sperm freezing (cryopreservation)+

General information

You will be scheduled for a consultation with a midwife to review what freezing involves and discuss how your frozen sperm may be used in the future. You can ask any questions you may have. The consultation takes about 30 minutes and costs SEK 700.

If you decide to proceed with freezing, a blood test is taken to ensure there are no blood-borne infections. The tests are the same as for blood donor screening. You pay separately for the tests according to the current price list.

If you choose to freeze sperm, a storage agreement will be signed during the visit.

Freezing

Once your blood test results are confirmed normal, we will contact you to book the freezing appointment—usually within a few days. The cost for freezing and one year of storage follows our current price list (see website).

When you submit a sample for freezing, we analyse its quality. If the quality is reduced, we may offer you to freeze an additional sample. The cost for freezing an additional sample is the same as the first time. Costs for continued storage after the first year are according to the current price list.

Your sample will be divided into a number of straws agreed between you and the clinic. The number of straws depends on the sample quality and how many potential future assisted reproduction treatments you want them to cover.

In addition to a copy of the signed agreement, you will receive a confirmation letter once freezing has been completed.

Before freezing, you will collect your sample according to specific instructions provided at the clinic.
